However, it’s also important to remember that a new puppy comes with a lot of responsibilities. To ensure your pup gets off to the best possible start, there are a few essential products you’ll need to make their transition smooth and stress-free. Whether you’re a first-time puppy owner or a seasoned pro, these 10 must-have items will help you create a happy and healthy environment for your new furry friend.

I wanted to include I am a dog owner of these two cute faces in the photo above. Ollie is a 3 year old chihuahua on the left and Arlo is a 2 year old Golden Retriever on the right. I got both dogs as puppies and let me tell you, having a puppy is such a fun experience but a very hard one.
Each puppy is different and what may work for one dog might not work for the other. I had to find different items to use for each of my dogs that worked better for them.
I am by no means an expert in anything dog related! I just want to share with my readers what has worked in the past for me and my dogs.
In this blog post, the links that I’ve attached are some of the items that I’ve personally used and some are Amazon’s Top Rated items. Each product is worth the click to make the most out of your puppy’s first year of life and on.
1. Puppy Toys: Playtime is Essential
Toys are not just fun—they’re essential for your puppy’s physical and mental development. Chew toys help soothe their teething discomfort and keep their teeth clean, while interactive toys provide entertainment and challenge their brains. Consider having a mix of different textures and types, like rubber chew toys, squeaky plush toys, and treat-dispensing puzzles. A variety of toys will ensure your puppy is never bored and will keep them from turning to your furniture for entertainment!

This is a cute and effective item for your new puppy! This stuffed dog toy comes with a heat pack and a heart object that stimulates the heartbeat of their mama. It’s used for anxiety relief and is a great calming aid for your pup in the early days of getting use to their new home.

2. Puppy Pads: Training Made Easier
Whether you’re potty training or need a quick solution for when you’re away, puppy pads are invaluable. They are great for teaching your pup where to relieve themselves indoors and help minimize accidents in the early stages. Look for pads with good absorbency and odor control. As your puppy gets older and becomes better trained, you can gradually reduce their reliance on pads.

These training pads are essential to use the first couple of weeks in your house. Some may chose to not use these pads and that’s ok too. My Chihuahua used these a lot in his first couple of weeks although my Golden Retriever did not use them at all. If you do chose to use these, designate a spot on in your house for your puppy to use the pad. The pad’s are leak proof and are very absorbent.

3. Crate: A Safe Haven
A crate is one of the most important items you’ll need for your puppy’s safety and comfort. Not only does it provide a secure space for them when you’re not around, but it’s also an essential tool for house training. Puppies tend to avoid soiling their sleeping areas, making crates a fantastic way to help them learn the boundaries of where to relieve themselves. Choose a crate that’s appropriately sized for your puppy, allowing them to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably.
The crate’s below are some good examples and are some of Amazon’s Best Selling dog crates. Depending what you’re looking for and the size of your puppy, one of these 3 crates are a good option to start with.

4. Puppy Blankets: Cozy Comfort
A soft, comfortable blanket can provide your puppy with a sense of security in their new home. Whether they’re in their crate, on their bed, or resting on the couch, a blanket can offer them warmth and familiarity. Some puppies find comfort in having a blanket that smells like their littermates or the scent of their new home. Make sure the blanket is washable to keep it fresh and clean.
Your puppy does not need a elaborate blanket or any special blanket. Any small blanket would work great for your pup, but the two I have listed below are on Amazon’s Best Selling list for puppy blankets! They come in different cute colours and are worth checking out!

5. Puppy Bed: Restful Sleep
A good night’s sleep is vital for a growing puppy, so a cozy and supportive puppy bed is a must. Look for a bed that’s easy to clean and offers the right amount of cushioning for your puppy’s joints. Whether you choose a round donut-shaped bed, a cushioned mat, or a plush pillow, ensure that the bed provides a comfortable place for your puppy to rest after a day of play and exploration.
A puppy’s dog bed does not have to be elaborate either. As long as they have a soft and comfy place to lay, they should be ok! My Chihuahua favoured the donut shaped bed over the rectangle one. I think he enjoys feeling all four corners of the bed around him. My Golden Retriever currently has the rectangle shaped bed below on the left side in the size large. It is orthopedic and has a comfortable foam insert for your pup.

6. Collars, Harnesses, and Leashes: Getting Ready for Walks
Taking your puppy for walks is one of the joys of pet ownership, and having the right collar, harness, and leash is essential. Collars are useful for identification purposes, but for walks, a harness is often a better choice as it distributes pressure evenly across your puppy’s chest and avoids straining their delicate neck. Make sure the collar or harness is adjustable and fits snugly but comfortably. Pair it with a lightweight leash to start teaching your pup good walking habits.
Below, I have listed both collar and leashes along with harness’ and leashes. I loved picking out the matching set for both my pups that fit their personalities. Each item below is on Amazon’s best selling list and they all come in so many cute designs and sizes!
(Also, don’t forget to purchase your puppy’s ID tag that you can personalize at most pet stores. Don’t forget to include your pup’s name on one side and your phone number on the other.)

This item is controversial and I understand and respect others opinions on this item. What I can say on my experience, this prong collar does wonders when training your dog to walk on a leash. 8. Food Bowls: Nourishment Time
Your puppy’s food and water bowls should be durable and easy to clean. Stainless steel or ceramic bowls are great choices because they are non-toxic, resistant to bacteria, and easy to wash. Invest in sturdy, non-slip bowls to prevent spills and make feeding time a bit easier. If you’re feeding your puppy specific amounts, a bowl with measurements can help you keep track of their portions.
You can pretty much use any dog bowl to feed your pup, it’s mostly based off of what you prefer! However, if your pup is a fast eater the first dog bowl below has a slow feeder insert which slows down your dog when eating. Again, any bowl will do fine!
